From the ruins of a 12th-century monastery arose a modernist tour de force by the internationally acclaimed French architect, Roger Anger. In 1985 he embarked on the renovation of this historic property’s brickwork, arches, vaulted stone ceilings, and columns. Into the ancient framework he wove his signature spare, yet elegant, aesthetic of polished white. The intertwined juxtaposition of the ancient and contemporary in this hilltop aerie magnifies the magnificence of both. Highlights include a swimming pool carved partially into rock and flanked by a looming half tower, an extraordinary mosaic sundial by decorative artist, Charles Gianferrari, an oversized in-ground mosaic tub, and walls of glass framing the enchanting vistas. This leading estate of the world is accessed over a dramatic drawbridge crossing the timeless vestige and belying the renaissance of the masterpiece that beckons.
