Perched high upon the southwestern slopes of the Simonsberg mountain range, the sprawling estate of Uitkyk—Afrikaans for “lookout”—revels in splendid panoramic views, its rich heritage, and spectacular setting. At the heart of the historic wine estate lies a painstakingly restored Neoclassical manor house adorned with period murals, one of only three double-story, flat-roofed Georgian style houses dating from the 18th Century still extant in the country. Uitkyk’s award-winning wines are grown on slopes ranging from 200 to 500 meters above sea level with nearly 100 hectares of the 600-hectare farm planted to vines, and a 1,000-tonne cellar provides plentiful wine storage. The estate additionally offers a conservancy of endangered silver trees, an extensive network of hiking and mountain bike trails, and two dams for irrigation.
