In 1853 Marquis Armand Alexis Odet de Montault inherited a 19th-century château in Normandy. He called on the noted Parisian architect of the Paris Halles and Opera, along with an illustrious student of Delacroix, who decorated the great hall, to revitalize the legacy into a monumental masterpiece. Original 18th-century French-style gardens were recreated by rich banker Vincent, who acquired the domain in 1918 and brought to life moat bridges, a serpentine lake, pond, topiaries, and avenues spreading over nearly a fourth of the 192 acres. Today, aglow with Versailles-style parquets, a Louis XV fireplace, and endless other precious antiques, the 33,000-square-foot marvel well merits its listing as one of the treasures of France.
